I’m actually not really a Lewis Hamilton fan but I do have him to thank for my love of Formula 1.
I’ve been an avid F1 fan for a few years now. I can visibly remember the first F1 race I watched was the 2018 Baku Grand Prix. Super noche and random I know, but trust me there’s an even more obscure story that is so fitting to me.
I’m not to best at telling stories in short so here it goes.
Lewis Hamilton is of course one of if not the most well known driver on the current grid with his big presence in the fashion world, dating A list celebrities (including Queen Nicki herself!). Anyways, so I have been I have been following Lewis on Instagram for a while unbeknownst to the fact that he is a multiple time world champion. I was watching a story he posted where he said “So happy to be here in Baku to see all the fans” and that tick something in my polyglot, country loving brain. I thought to myself “Why on earth would Lewis Hamilton be in Azerbaijan?!”. No disrespect to Azerbaijan of course, it’s just a super niche country for someone like Lewis Hamilton to visit in my opinion. So I did some research and discovered that Formula 1 is in fact quite the travelling sport.
And that was it… that’s what got me.
Personally, I’ve always been attracted to the different personalities of professional athletes in all sports. I feel like that’s the same for a lot of sports fans and causal sports watchers. If you can spark an emotional reaction from an audience member, all you then have to do is show them what you love doing… the audience will decide whether or not they like you.
See for me for example, when I first got into F1 in 2018 it was during the Mercedes’s era of dominance. I thought to myself “hmmm well I can’t start support the winning team or I come across as a glory hunter” so I began supporting the then 2nd placed team which was Redbull Racing. Back then they had the ever so loveable Aussie Daniel Riccardo!!! And Max Verstappen racing for them too. As an Aussie I felt like I was my citizen duties by rooting for my fellow compatriot.
5 years on and here I am… a two time Melbourne Grand Prix attendee, whilst Max Verstappen is a 3 time world champion.
